Understanding How Digital Photography Works
The tipping point has finally been reached where digital cameras are outselling film cameras in this country, and it's becoming increasingly aparent that the gap will only widen in the coming years. And although many digital camera buyers know how to get the finished product, they may not understand the process in between taking the picture and printing it out.
Our site is here to hep educate consumers on the most important aspects of digital photography, because an educated consumer makes better buying decisions. So here is a general overview of how the whole digital photography process works.
First you have the camera itself. All cameras work on the same basic principles, whether they be digital or not, single lens reflex cameras or just point and shoot cameras. They all consist of a body that has a lens on the front that focuses an image on either film or a digital sensor in the back of the camera. Depending on how sophisticated the camera is, it may be able to automatically focus the lens for you, select shutter speeds, apertures and so on. And on the most flexible cameras, such as SLRs, you may be able to switch back and forth between total camera control and having your own control over each shot instead.
When you take a picture with a digital camera, the image that is captured by the sensor is stored on a removable media device as an information file. When that media fills up, you have to insert another one to keep taking pictures. The good news with digital cameras is that ,unlike film, you can reuse the storage media over and over again at no extra cost.
Once you have your photos saved onto the media card or disc, you have to do something with that file to get it printed. If you don't have a photo printer, you can always take your media to a local photo processing lab and they can print them for you much like they do for film cameras. But these days, good photo printers are so inexpensive to buy that it makes sense to get one to print out your own photos at home.
On some photo printers you can just insert your media card and print directly from it. But for many, a different option is more attractive. You can connect your digital camera to your home computer and upload all the files on your media card to the computer and then use specialized photo editing software that lets the average person change the photos by cutting out elements that they don't want in each shot, removing red eye if flash was used, improving the color, adjusting for exposure and so much more. By using photo editing software you can get much nicer photos when you are finally ready to print them out.
Photo printers these days turn out such great and amazing pictures that also hold up and last a long time, so you will be amazed at the results ypou get. And after printing your photos you can even email the files to friends and family and share them quickly and easily. It's all just that simple.
It's no wonder that digital photography is fast becoming the standard for the average photographer. And as the technology continues to improve, it will only get better and easier.
